About the Founder

Julie Somarriba | Founder & Principal Advisor

My understanding of place began on a working farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains, among cattle pastures, Christmas trees, and tobacco fields. My grandmother told time by the sun’s angle in the sky. The seasons shaped my family’s work. The land sustained it. Caring for a place meant understanding both what it could provide and what it needed in return.

With undergraduate degrees in architecture and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, I grew into project leadership, spending more than 22 years in healthcare design, construction, and development. That work taught me that buildings can care for people the way the land cared for my family.

Most recently, I led the development of a roughly $1B medical campus and served as Director of Sustainability and Climate Health. Both roles required bringing clinical needs, human experience, environmental goals, operational realities, and capital investment into alignment. They also showed me how much of a place’s effect on health is decided before design begins.

I founded Origin of Well to extend that perspective across the places that shape our lives, so the health of people and land is part of the decisions, and the business case, from the very start.

Philosophy

I believe the health of people, places, and the land is deeply connected. The environments we shape influence how we move, gather, restore, and belong. They also shape the health of the land, the vitality of communities, and the value an investment can sustain over time.

My work begins with understanding those relationships. What is already here? What makes this place distinctive? What should be preserved, and what could strengthen its future?

Connecting Purpose, Place & Investment

My work spans strategy, development leadership, and capital partnerships. I translate between owners, investors, designers, researchers, and communities: clarifying priorities, assembling expertise, and guiding a shared direction. I help clients connect what they want a place to contribute with what it will take to develop, fund, operate, and sustain it.

I evaluate value through financial performance, human well-being, and the long-term health of a place.

The curiosity that began in the mountains still guides my work: observe closely, reveal potential, bring people and resources together, and care for what sustains a place and the people within it.
